Who may register as a student on ePays?
Any student at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) , that has been allocated to ePays must register. You will receive an sms with links to register.
Can I make payments to any accommodation merchant (POSA)?
No, accommodation can only be paid to UJ-approved POSA’s, in addition, you will only be able to pay for accommodation to the POSA that you are registered to reside at.
Can I pay for expenses such as meals to any bank account.
No, the bank account for expenses must be in your name, this will be digitally verified with the bank after you register before any funds can be transferred.
When I add my bank account I get an error.
Your bank account number and branch code are sent in batches for verification. It takes approximately 2 business days to verify.
Make sure that you have entered your bank account number correctly, without any spaces or special characters. In some cases your card number is not the same as your bank account number, make sure you use your bank account number.
Ensure that you select the correct type of account savings or cheque, if you chose the incorrect one, this error will occur.
If you do not know your branch number or are unsure, use the universal branch code for your bank. This number will be shown when you click on the field.
Make sure to only use a bank account in your name as this will pass the initial verification, but will be rejected later when the ID number of the bank account owner is verified.
Can I use any funds for any category?
No, Each category of funds is allocated an amount, only this amount can be paid per category. For example, the amount allocated to accommodation can only be paid to your accommodation merchant (POSA).
Who may register and a merchant on ePays?
Only merchants that have been approved by the University of Johannesburg (UJ), and signed the take on agreement, may register. You will receive an email/sms with links to register.
When I add my bank account I get an error.
- The bank account number you enter is digitally verified in real-time when you submit your details to check that the account number and account type exist at the bank and branch you specified.
- Make sure that you have entered your bank account number correctly, without any spaces or special characters. In some cases your card number is not the same as your bank account number, make sure you use your bank account number.

When do merchants (POSA's) receive payment.
After the funds are transferred by the University of Johannesburg (UJ) to the student’s ePays wallet, the student must release payment to the POSA from their wallet.
What happens if I forget my password
Click on the forgot password link on the ePays wallet site, you will be sent a link via email to reset your password.
What do I need to connect to my ePays wallet.
- You will need a smartphone / tablet or computer with internet access.
- To receive OTP’s you will need a device with your sim card installed. This sim card must be registered to your telephone number on record with the University of Johannesburg (UJ)
What happens if I change my phone number.
You will need to contact the University of Johannesburg (UJ) to amend your phone number on record. Once that is done contact support to update your phone number.
I have lost my phone / sim card.
Please contact support to block your account until you have performed a sim swap.
